Jubal Anderson Early



Early, Jubal Anderson (1816–94), Confederate general. In his famous advance on Washington, D.C. (1864), he cleared the Shenandoah Valley of Union forces. His army was subsequently forced to retreat and was defeated by Union troops under Philip Sheridan.
