Durban



Durban (pop. 982,100), city in the Republic of South Africa, province of Natal. It is the third-largest city in southern Africa and South Africa's biggest seaport, providing a major outlet to the Indian Ocean, equipped with ship-repair yards and floating docks. Exports include coal, mineral ores, and agricultural products; imports include petroleum, grain, and timber. Durban's manufactures include fertilizers, textiles, and metalware, along with sugar and petroleum refining. Durban's beaches and parks and African and Indian markets have made it one of the country's leading tourist resorts, and it is also a cultural center.
