Dumbarton Oaks Conference, meeting of diplomats of the “Big Four” (China, United States, USSR, and England), held Aug. 24-Oct. 7, 1944, at the Dumbarton Oaks estate in Washington, D.C. Its discussions were the first major step toward establishing a postwar international security.
