Jean Dubuffet

Dubuffet, Jean (1901–85), French artist influenced by spontaneous primitive amateur art, known as art brut (raw art). He used gravel, tar, and other unusual materials to produce fantastic impasto paintings that constitute fierce protests against conventional aesthetic criteria.
