Gustave Doré



Doré, Gustave (1832–83), French engraver, illustrator, and painter. He created dreamlike, grandiose scenes in a fantastic, bizarre style and is known especially for line engravings of unusual power in editions of Balzac's Contes Drolatiques (1855), Dante's Inferno (1861), Cervantes's Don Quixote (1863), and the Bible (1866).
