Donetsk



Donetsk (pop. c 1,100,000), large city in the Ukraine. Located in the Donets River basin, it is one of the most important industrial cities in the former USSR. The rich coal deposits of the region are used in the production of iron, steel, machinery, and food products. Founded in the 1870s, it became Stalino in 1935, but its name was changed back to Donetsk in 1961.
