Johann Joseph Ignaz von Dollinger



Dollinger, Johann Joseph Ignaz von (1799–1890), German Roman Catholic historian and theologian, excommunicated (1871) for rejecting the doctrine of papal infallibility. A professor of ecclesiastical history and law at Munich University (1826–71), his books include The Pope and the Council (1869), which criticizes papal authoritarianism. He was an early leader of the Old Catholics.
