Dixiecrat Party



Dixiecrat Party, southern faction of the U.S. Democratic Party that opposed the 1948 party platform on civil rights. They ran their own candidates, Governor Strom Thurmond of South Carolina for president and Governor Fielding Wright of Mississippi for vice-president, against the incumbent president, Harry S. Truman, and received 1,169,000 national and 39 electoral votes.
