Father Divine



Divine, Father (George Baker; 1880?–1965), African-American religious leader. He was the founder of the Peace Mission Movement, a nonsectarian, interracial church that worked to promote racial justice, peace, and an end to poverty. The movement began in Harlem and won the support of many people throughout the United States. Deified by his devotees, Father Divine was harshly criticized by others for his lavish life-style.
