Divide

Divide, line of high ground, such as a mountain ridge or chain of hills, that determines the direction of flow of streams and rivers. It is sometimes called a watershed. A divide may extend the length of a continent, as does the Continental Divide formed by the Rocky Mountains in North America. Rivers east of this divide flow into the Gulf of Mexico or the Atlantic Ocean, and rivers west of it flow into the Pacific Ocean.
