Diphtheria



Diphtheria, acute contagious disease caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae, characterized by the formation of a soft crust (pseudomembrane) that forms in the inflamed throat, and by tissue damage in the heart and nervous system, a result of poisons produced by the bacteria. An effective vaccine prevents diphtheria.
