Diocletian



Diocletian (Gaius Aurelius Valerius Diocletianus; A.D. 245–313), Roman emperor A.D. 284–305. He reformed the army and administration, dividing the empire into 4 regions (293), ruled by 2 emperors and 2 caesars. Much of his great palace at Split, Yugoslavia, survives. In 303 he initiated the last universal persecution of the Christians. He abdicated in 305.
