Didion, Joan (1934– ), U.S. writer concerned with the “atomization” of post-World War II society. Her work includes the essay collections Slouching Towards Bethlehem (1968) and The White Album (1979) and the novels Play It As It Lays (1970) and A Book of Common Prayer (1977).
