Design

Design, purposeful arrangement of the elements in a creative work or process. Design is evident in the fine arts, industrial arts, engineering, and architecture, and in systems and processes. Broadly speaking, the aim of design is to unify function and aesthetics in a harmonious whole. Design in the fine arts refers to composition: how color, shape, and line create pattern and visual rhythm. In the applied arts, design also encompasses the product's function, the physical capabilities of the material, and the method of manufacture. Design of a process or system refers to the overall plan: how materials are utilized and coordinated with movement to achieve a purpose. Here criteria are efficiency, economy, and simplicity.
