Delhi

Delhi (pop. 7,206,700), city in northern India, on a plain that has always been strategically important for control of the whole Indian subcontinent. In 1638 it became the capital of the Mogul Empire, and it had previously been the center of the Delhi Sultanate (1192–1398). The city fell to the British in 1803. In 1912 the administrative center of New Delhi was built immediately adjacent to it, and was designated the capital of British India. The old city, however, has a larger population.
