Henry Dearborn



Dearborn, Henry (1751–1829), U.S. soldier and politician. A captain of militia during the Revolution, he was secretary of war under Thomas Jefferson (1801–09). During the War of 1812, he commanded the Northern frontier but incurred heavy losses and was relieved of his command. He also served as a U.S. representative (1793–77) and minister to Portugal (1822–24). Chicago's Fort Dearborn was named for him.
