Silas Deane



Deane, Silas (1737–89), U.S. diplomat and first envoy to Europe. Sent to France in 1776, he was successful in recruiting officers and obtaining arms. Unpopular in the United States for urging reconciliation with England (1781), he went into exile in that country.
