Anaximander

Anaximander (611?–547? B.C.), Greek philosopher, first to give a naturalistic, rather than mythological, explanation to natural processes. He believed that the origin of all things was a formless matter, which he called “indefinite.” His later works anticipated the theory of evolution and certain laws of astronomy.
