Amritsar

Amritsar (pop. 708,800), city in Punjab state in northwest India. The center of the Sikh religion, it is the site of the Amritsar or sacred “pool of immortality” in which Sikhs immerse themselves as an act of purification. The city is also an important industrial center, known for textiles and carpets.
