Amphitheater

Amphitheater, open edifice built in the Roman Empire for public viewing of contests and spectacles (e.g., the Colosseum in Rome). Usually oval in form, it comprises a central arena surrounded by ascending rows of seats. Gladiators and animals used in the spectacles were held under the arena. The term is now used loosely for any large auditorium.
