Idi Amin Dada



Amin Dada, Idi (1925–), president of Uganda (1971–79). He led the military overthrow of President Milton Obote in 1971. A flamboyant and dictatorial ruler, he expelled Uganda's Asian middle class in 1972, called for the extinction of Israel in 1975, and purged many opponents. In 1975–76 he was president of the Organization of African Unity. Insurrectionists, aided by Tanzanian forces, drove out Amin in 1979. After his exile to Saudi Arabia, his whereabouts were uncertain.
