American Library Association, society “to extend and improve library service throughout the world.” Founded in Philadelphia (1876) by Melvil Dewey, it is the world's oldest and largest library association and has had great influence on library development in English-speaking countries, as well as in Scandinavia, the Netherlands, and Germany. With headquarters in Chicago, the organization has more than 50,000 members.
