Altoona



Altoona (pop. 130,542), city in Blair County, south-central Pennsylvania, at the foot of the Allegheny Mountains, about 90 mi (145 km) east of Pittsburgh. First settled in 1849 as a construction camp for the Pennsylvania Railroad, it was incorporated as a city in 1868. Altoona is noted for the manufacture and repair of locomotives and railway cars. Bituminous coal deposits are found nearby.
