Alternation of generations

Alternation of generations, in many lower plants and animals, alternation of 2 distinct forms. One form reproduces sexually and gives rise to the other form, which reproduces asexually. The offspring of the generation that reproduces asexually usually reproduce sexually again, but under certain conditions several asexual generations may follow each other.
