Altamira

Altamira, cave near Santander, northern Spain, inhabited during the Aurignacian, upper Solutrean, and Magdalenian periods (14,000 B.C.–10,000 B.C.). In 1879 the daughter of an amateur archaeologist discovered the striking cave paintings, believed to date from the Magdalenian period. They skillfully depict larger-than-life bulls, boars, and horses, among other paleolithic animals.
