Alkaloid

Alkaloid, any of a group of organic alkali compounds found in certain plants and fungi, containing carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen. Many alkaloids are poisonous; others, such as morphine, nicotine, and cocaine, can be addictive. Other alkaloids are caffeine and quinine. In small doses alkaloids are powerful medicines, used as analgesics, tranquilizers, and cardiac and respiratory stimulants.
