Alexander of Tunis, 1st Earl (Harold Rupert Leofric George Alexander; 1891–1969), last British-born governor of Canada (1946–52). He was known for his military achievements in both world wars and, in 1944, was named commander in chief of all Allied forces for Italy. Knighted (1942) and made Viscount Alexander of Tunis (1946), he then served as minister of defense for Britain (1952–54).
