Alexander III



Alexander III (Orlando Bandinelli; d.1181), pope (1159–81). He continued a longstanding conflict with the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick I. Opposed also by 3 antipopes, he was victorious over Frederick at the Battle of Legano in 1176. He convened the Third Lateran Council (1179) and forced King Henry II of England to recognize papal supremacy.
