Aleppo



Aleppo (pop. 1,400,000), second-largest city of Syria. It flourished in Byzantine times as a trade center on the caravan route to Baghdad. An important manufacturing center, its industries include textile- and carpet-making. The cultural center of Syria, Aleppo contains the National Museum, a medieval citadel, and numerous mosques with many fine examples of Islamic art.
