Ira Frederick Aldridge



Aldridge, Ira Frederick (1805–67), first African American to achieve fame as an actor in the Western Hemisphere. Because of limited opportunities in the United States due to racial prejudice, he was forced to go to Europe, where he became known for his bold interpretations of Lear, Othello, and Macbeth.
