Albuquerque (pop. 398,500), largest city in New Mexico and seat of Bernalillo County, situated on the Rio Grande. Founded in 1706, it is an important commercial and industrial city, a center for nuclear energy and defense research, and a transcontinental air and land route hub. Its dry, sunny climate and nearby mountains and Native American reservations have made it a popular tourist center.
