Alamo

siege

Alamo, Spanish mission fortress in San Antonio, Tex. It was the site of a heroic defense (1836) by fewer than 200 Texans in the struggle for independence from Mexico. All the defenders, including Davy Crockett and Jim Bowie, died in a lengthy siege by 4,000 Mexicans under Gen. Santa Anna. The famous phrase “remember the Alamo” refers to the siege.
