Zürich



Zürich (pop. 343,100), city in northern Switzerland, capital of Zürich canton, and the nation's financial and education center. The Romans settled Zürich c.A.D. 100 as the fortified Turicum. It joined the Swiss Confederation that became modern Switzerland (1351). Zürich is a tourist and cultural center, home to the University of Zürich; the National Museum; 2 11th-century churches, the Grossmünster and the Fraumünster; and the 15th-century Wasserkirche. Industrial products include precision machinery, textiles, food, paper, and tobacco. The world's banking and gold-trade centers are located in Zürich.
