Zululand

Zululand former semi-autonomous homeland in Natal, South Africa. It borders on Mozambique, the Indian Ocean, Swaziland, and the Buffalo and Tugela rivers. It produces sugarcane, cotton, and maize. Cattle raising is the traditional occupation of the Zulus, a Bantu people who comprise most of the population. Traditionally they live in beehive-shaped huts in fenced compounds called kraals. Zululand was annexed by the British in 1887 after prolonged Zulu resistance to white conquest. Many Zulu men now work as migrant laborers in mines and in cities.
