Zhao Ziyang



Zhao Ziyang (1919– ), premier of China (1980–87), successor to Hua Kuo-feng (Hua Guofeng). Purged during the Cultural Revolution, Zhao was later “rehabilitated.” He was appointed governor of Szechwan (Sichuan) province in 1975 and elected to the politburo in 1979. Party leader from 1987–89. In 1989 he was removed from office.
