Zanzibar

Zanzibar, island, part of Tanzania, off eastern Africa. It was a center of an Omani Arab sultanate (1700) with extensive mainland territories. Zanzibar became a British protectorate (1890–93), part of German East Africa (1893), an independent sultanate (1963), and a republic (1964). It then united (1964) with nearby Pemba and with Tanganyika to form Tanzania. The chief exports are cloves and copra.
