Yuma

Yuma (pop. 106,895), city in southwestern Arizona, seat of Yuma County, situated on the Colorado River at the mouth of the Gila River. The location, an important river crossing, was visited by European explorers perhaps as early as 1540, but the town (originally Colorado City) was not founded until 1854. The development of irrigation systems in the early 1900s made the region an important agricultural area. Marine and army installations and tourism help support Yuma's economy.
