York



York (pop. 107,700), city in northern England. Built on the site of a Roman fort, it emerged during the early Middle Ages as an important religious capital and trade center. Today York, with its many museums and historic buildings and churches, thrives primarily on tourism. The Cathedral of St. Peter, known as Minster Cathedral, and the National Railway Museum are of special interest. It also supports several industries, including the manufacture of precision instruments.
