Xhosa, group of related tribes (formerly called Kafir) predominantly living in Transkei, South Africa. Bantu-speaking, they are mainly agriculturists, though some cattle are raised. The Xhosa are organized in patrilineal clans. Many now work as migrant laborers in Johannesburg.
