Woodcarving

Woodcarving, old art form involving the chiseling of wood to create designs or figures. Woodcarving has played a significant role in the religious and cultural life of many of the world's great civilizations. Notable woodcarvers throughout history have achieved status as artists. Today woodcarving involves a variety of tools, including chisels of many sizes and shapes, gouges with different types of cutting edges, and parting tools for deeper cutting. Some woodcarving is done by machine on high-speed cutters.
