Wollongong



Wollongong (pop. 238,200), city located in the state of New South Wales on the southeast coast of Australia. Founded in 1816, it achieved status as a city in 1942. Because of nearby coal deposits, it has become a major industrial and shipping center; its industries include coal mining, iron and steel production, chemicals, and processed foods. The city includes many examples of 19th-century Victorian and Georgian architecture.
