Wig

Wig, covering for the head of real or artificial hair, worn as a cosmetic device, as a mark of rank or office, as a disguise, or for theatrical portrayals. Known since ancient times, wigs became fashionable in 17th- and 18th-century Europe, when elaborate headpieces for women and full, curled wigs for men came into wide use. The latter are still worn in British law courts. In the 1960s wigs came back into fashion for women. Small hairpieces called toupees are worn to conceal baldness.
