White Mountains



White Mountains, section of the Appalachian Mountains covering about 1,000 sq mi (2,590 sq km) in northern New Hampshire and western Maine. They include the Presidential, Sandwich, Carter-Moriah, and Franconia ranges. The highest peak, Mt. Washington (6,288 ft/1,917 m), is in the Presidential Range. Deep canyons, called notches, have been carved out by glaciers. The area is noted for its scenic beauty.
