White, E(lwyn) B(rooks) (1899–1985), U.S. writer noted for his witty, well-crafted essays in The New Yorker magazine. His work includes humorous poems, the satire Is Sex Necessary? (1929, with James Thurber), and such children's books as Stuart Little (1945) and Charlotte's Web (1952).
