White, U.S. family including father and son journalists: William Allen (1868–1944) and William Lindsay (1900–73). Beginning with the editorial What's the Matter with Kansas? (1895) that appeared in his own newspaper, the Gazette, William Allen became an important voice in national politics. As a reporter for the Emporia, another Kansas newspaper, he won the Pulitzer Prize (1923). His autobiography also won the Pulitzer Prize (1947). William Lindsay worked for a number of newspapers, including the Gazette and the Washington Post. He was a noted correspondent during World War II. He wrote a book about the war entitled They Were Expendable (1942).
