William Almon Wheeler



Wheeler, William Almon (1819–87), vice president of the United States from 1877 to 1881. A Republican, he served under Pres. Rutherford B. Hayes. He began his career as a lawyer, and from 1861 to 1863 and 1869 to 1877 he represented New York in the House of Representatives. In 1875 he was part of a committee formed to settle a dispute over an election in Louisiana. His “Wheeler Adjustment” was a compromise that gave the Democratic and Republican parties control of the Louisiana state government.
