Wheel and axle



Wheel and axle, disklike mechanical device consisting of a wheel mounted on an axle of smaller diameter; the wheel and axle turn on the same axis. A first-class lever, it is used to facilitate the movement of heavy objects. The wheel and axle is one of the classic simple machines, along with the pulley and the screw.
