Western European Union



Western European Union (WEU), defensive economic, social, and cultural alliance among Belgium, France, Great Britain, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, and Germany, formed in 1955. Spain and Portugal joined in 1988 and Greece in 1991. Comprising most of the members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the organization works to strengthen the European part of NATO.
