Franz Werfel



Werfel, Franz (1890–1945), Austrian novelist, poet, and playwright. His early plays and poetry, such as Der Spiegelmensch (1920), were important works of German expressionism. He fled Nazi-occupied Austria (1938) and later settled in the United States. His novels include Embezzled Heaven (1939), The Song of Bernadette (1941), and Jacobowsky and the Colonel (1944).
