Gideon Welles



Welles, Gideon (1802–78), U.S. secretary of the navy in Pres. Abraham Lincoln's cabinet. During the Civil War, he directed the navy to block off the Confederate coast and to patrol the Mississippi River. Originally a newspaper editor, Welles left the Democrats in disagreement over slavery to help found (1856) the Republican Party.
